The English were split, Churchill was the right man at the right time...as I understand it talking to my family Hitler didn't believe the English had a lot of fight emotionally or militarily in them.

They all told me there was a grudging respect amongst Germans & English, before and during the war.

Considering that a lot of the royal families in England (i.e. Hanover, Windsor) were German, there was a certain kinship. I'm sure Hitler didn't care so much, but there's definitely an historical connection.
