    Thank god.

      Best case scenario?

Not the ACL and not torn. Back after the bye week and plays the last 10 games before the playoffs.

I think he should be able to come back in a month or so.

But an MCL injury is frequently a precursor to an ACL blowing out.

Remember McNabb's career. He injured his MCL in his first season, played with a brace... then a couple of seasons his ACL went out.

I could be wrong and the injuries weren't in the same leg, but that's the way I remember things.

A grade 3 sprain is a bad tear and four weeks would be the minimum. My torn MCL was bad. Now, that was 17 years ago and I was a high school player and not a pro. But great rehab facilities or not, four weeks sounds pretty damn quick to come back.

The worst thing for me was the field test for the tear. The trainer had me roll on my stomach, flexed my knee 90 degrees so my lower leg was parallel to the ground, then rotated my toes outward. I still remember it.

The thing about an MCL tear, and I know this from talking with orthopedic surgeons, is that they usually heal without surgery.

An ACL repair always requires surgery. Surgery and the cutting required always takes time to recover from.

Yeah, I didn't require surgery, which was great. But I was in an immobilizer for a while (2 weeks? No idea now), then a big crazy brace for lateral stability that also locked to prevent me from flexing my leg too far.

I mean, the Eagles will be doing everything medically possible to get him healed (well, back on the field). And Mathis is motivated because he wanted a new contract anyway. Maybe braces and painkillers are enough, but four weeks would surprise me.

Honestly, if there is any way that the replacements could hold up until after the break, I would feel a lot better about trotting him out there.
