Listen to Ken
1. It's 24/7. Don't ever forget it.
2. Know who are your big time customers and service them like you were a Tijuana whore.
3. Watch the pennies and the dollars will follow.
4. When you make a decision, make it right, even if it is wrong. Believe in it like you're freaking Peter Pan.
If you are young, do it. If you are "of a certain age" stick with the BAC because there is no freaking way you'll have the energy to get it done. I ran a family business in my 20s and 30s and it nearly freaking killed me.
The business you are in, you are going to need a solid client that you can totally rely on and that you are willing to blow every day. When they call, you should be answering them in seconds. No unreasonable request is unreasonable enough for you to say, "ah gee I was going to Sea Isle City this weekend, I can't get that done til next week." Show them that you are the best service that they can ever get, because I'm guessing the work product is pretty fungible.
The last thing I'll say is people who haven't run their own business are prone to saying that they are they're own boss. They are manifestly NOT their own boss. Their customers are their boss, and they are the ones that pay you. Don't be misled into thinking that (to paraphrase Dylan) you don't have to serve someone. You do. It's just not one person anymore, it's as many customers as you have.
