It was an Andy Reid type call he did the exact same thing two years ago with the same results. What's the over/under for Chip calling a timeout after coming out of a TV timeout and 2 minute warning because they didn't get the play in on time. Andy is the only Coach i've ever seen do that.

Shitty 3rd down defense, multiple bad calls by Chippy, bad game for Fooles, bad game for Shady, O-line in shambles, ridiculously bad penalties by the refs - and yet they still could have won it.

Yup. I went into that game with a bad feeling. It ended up being worse than I expected - yet they almost won. They were 1-3 and 3-5 last season and they figured it out. This team has something about it, the way it scraps, that I really like. I'm not too worried.

when chip took that penalty all i could think was that he expected the 9ers to go for it on 4th down, and he thought he'd be able to keep them to 4th and 5+ yards to force harbaugh's hand into a FG. of course, if you don't trust your defense to make a stop on 4th down, i don't see how you can trust them to make a stop on 3rd down and then the possible subsequent 4th down.

maybe he thought kaepernick would run around and get sacked like he did 4 times in the game, or throw up an interception. chip goes with his gut in such situations. maybe he thought he'd get the miracle play he needed on 3rd and long. he made the wrong decision but it ultimately didn't matter much. chip's goal line play calling was a bigger issue.

But my feeling about Kempski's post is based upon the fact that the Eagles defense has sucked for a long long time on third and longs. This predates Kelly-- it goes back to Reid's (FF's) tenure as coach.
