Howie will still be able to swing his dick

If he's holding the purse strings he'll be able to dictate, at least a little, what goes down.

The good thing about this arrangement for Chip is that he doesn't have to get his hands dirty with contracts. Somebody wants an extension? He doesn't have to be in the position of denying it.

We don't really know who controlled what in terms of personnel. Maybe the dubious picks last year were a result of Howie's slotting guys. Maybe it was on Howie to have guys in tiers or predict how the first round was going to play out. We do know the Eagles planned to take one of like five guys they thought would be there. Howie assured Kelly that Hart would be there in the fifth, maybe he also assured Kelly one of their targeted guys would be there in the first.

We don't really know, though. It'd be nice to think Lurie made his decision because Howie was a shitty personnel guy and Kelly will be better. But we can't assume he makes that decision in a vacuum. Lurie didn't have much choice here but to keep Kelly happy. If there was internal strife and he sided with Howie instead of the popular coach, the fans would be pissed and he would have probably turned off any eventual successor to Kelly.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary for a GM to be a "football guy" but I trust Kelly, who has spent his life courting talent as a recruiter, buying his own groceries.

For sure, it's pretty much all on Kelly now.

What I find most comforting is this ensures Kelly is here for the long haul. Long enough for him to either win a SB or be exposed as just another guy.

Great minds. I posted the same thing about Howie last night before Ray Diddy. Howie is the new Banner and that's actually a good thing. Might prevent the idiot from trying to draft a Taylor Hart in the 3rd round again like he wanted last year.

Can't wait for Harry to bail. The sooner the better.

He already has failed. He didn't improve on a 10-6 season and missed the playoffs.

He's an abject failure and had no business being an NFL coach. We need a winner like Pete Carroll. I'm sure he never had two seasons like Kelly has.

Someone changed his mind and that person will be in attendance watching Oregon play Ohio State for the national championship. He'll also be rooting for the ducks.

the only thing that can make Didinger seem correct in this scenario is if Chip wants to sign say Revis and Maxwell and Howie tells him he cannot both based on the cap or that he doesn't see the value in any particular guy he wants in FA from a financial angle. then Chip goes to Lurie and Lurie sides with Roseman because he is the cap/$ guy and he trusts his opinion on it.

He thinks Howie will have more say than we think about who the talent evaluator is that Kelly brings in, when the guy he wanted was already fired.
If I'm Lurie, and Howie is as trusted as is reported, I want Howie around at least as Devil's Advocate. I don't want the entire operation to be run by Chip + his yes-men.
