I apologize for the Cut an paste...its interesting.
The Eagles may be at a disadvantage if they pursue McCourty. Two years ago, the Eagles signed Patriots free agent safety Patrick Chung to a three-year contract. Chung had some injury issues, but never really settled into the Eagles’ system. Chung ended up starting 10 games for the Eagles in 2013.
The Eagles released Chung after one season. He wound up signing with the Patriots again last year. That means he spent the entire season with McCourty. Sometime during those months, there is every chance that McCourty asked Chung what happened with the Eagles. If Chung’s reply hinted that the situation in Philadelphia was less than ideal, that could be all it takes to convince McCourty to look elsewhere.
Remember, McCourty will be the top safety on the market in a year when there aren’t many top safeties available in either free agency or the draft. He will not be lacking for opportunities.
If the Eagles are truly interested in pursuing Seattle cornerback Byron Maxwell, they may not choose to pay two top-tier free agents in one offseason. That could mean splurging on Maxwell and going for a cheaper option at safety.
