Haha that's one of the first things I thought

A longtime online friend told me she has three relatives who were very high up in that crazy cult until they somehow broke away around ten years ago. One of them lectures all over the country telling people what a BS cult it is.

She also said a good friend got involved in it and by the end they had taken her life savings.

    In a word...bizarre.

I drive by L.Ron Hubbard Blvd and their fucking huge temple/office building once a month. They own the whole block. A lot of cash and a lot of craziness.
500 internet fights, that's the number I figured when I first joined igglephans. 500 internet fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate internet-tough guy. You need them for experience, to develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then...after...you realize that's what you are.

Saw the documentary last night. Well done.

I had to LOL at some of the stuff because it was so bizarre. Seems like Scientology really got a foothold during the late 60's and early 70's when "almost anything goes" was the mentality of the day. It's hard to explain to people the mind set of those times. Maybe space exploration lead to people thinking openly about science fiction, aliens, etc...

Anyway, I agree about the IRS rolling over. It's a shame they basically have the power to legitimize a cult as religion.

That place is a massive fortress and impossible to tell what it is if you don't know.

Scientology is bat-shit crazy, but think the 3 major religions are just as far-fetched & get a pass because they aren't as new. Is a talking snake and a guy living inside a whale any more believable than the shit L. Ron Hubbard spewed?

I'm actually glad Scientology is around.

The positive effect of Scientology is that it's a current and highly visible (thanks Hollywood) example of how religions are formed, propagated, and reliant on completely ridiculous ideas and people seeking answers.

On the whole, while's is just about as ridiculous as other religions, I'd say it's more plausible that we're on this planet due to the efforts of an inter-planetary alien than some ubiquitous omniscience.
