There were a couple reports saying the discussions about Mariota, at least, never got to the stage of naming any players.

Peter King had something on it, which I think McLane confirmed.

That's not to say Mathis, Kendricks, etc. haven't had their names mentioned in trade talks, but there's at least some possibility he can say that to some of these guys and be speaking the truth.

I think that's the point - if his players think that his remarks are genuine or not. I'm sure that the players are professional and all, but hey...it has to burn in the back of your mind that you are now considered something of an also ran.
