Providence is much closer to Foxboro. All Visiting teams fly into Providence and stay in downtown Providence, most stay at the Omni. Unless you have something you really want to see in Boston I recommend staying in Providence. Plenty of restaurants/bars. 100% chance running into some players if you went to Fleming’s or Hemingway's on Saturday night. The Amtrak station is within walking distance of the hotels. When the Patriots have home games there is a train from Warwick/Providence to Gillette.

I have a buddy that lives in High Point which is only about 1 1/2 hours from Charlotte. Close place to crash afterwards
