If Jenner wasn't part of the Kardashian hype/fame machine I'd see this as a more important interaction between social/sports issues.

Unfortunately, he is part of that machine so I think it's always going to put an aura of exploitation and money-grabbing around it for me.

I agree with this. Bruce Jenner coming out as transgender is a huge story. He's the epitome of American masculinity and athletic achievement.

The Kardashian connection taints it and raises questions that it's at least partially publicity driven. Also, because of that connection he's first considered as "Kardashian" rather than Bruce fucking Jenner.
