  • Okay I'm going to make an admission

To reveal my true inner dimness.

Since 1972, on and off, I've been listening to the Allman Brothers' "Eat a Peach" album. I'm sure Phish has done entire shows on just that album.

Anyway, one of my favorite jams on the album has always been "Les Brers in A Minor." Pretty cool. Despite 10+ years of French and semi fluency at one point in my life, it never occurred to me that "les brers" was just French for "the brothers." I had never done a study of the matter, but I thought it was just some sort of drug-addled reference.

Today, listening to it on my iPod, I suddenly realized, "Hey, that's French! It just means 'the brothers.'"

Since 1972. Yup, you heard me right. What a maroon.

Except that "brer" is apparently a colloquialism for "brother."

Aside from a bit of help in Montreal and France on vacation ... 6 years of junior high and high school French boils down to correcting you on Igglephans.

It knew I took that instead of Spanish for a reason.

It's southern dialect used by Cajun blacks in the French Quarters of the early 20th century.
