Per Reuben Frank:
Don’t tell Giants punter Steve Weatherford June is too early for trash talking.
Weatherford's in midseason form.
Weatherford took a few shots at Eagles quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow during a New York radio appearance Friday. Weatherford spoke with former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason and former Philly talk-show host Craig Carton on WFAN’s morning show.
According to the New York Daily News, Weatherford’s first target was Tebow, who the Eagles signed this offseason after he sat out the last two seasons.
“I’m the biggest Tim Tebow fan in the world,” Weatherford said. “I mean, who wouldn’t want their daughter to date a guy like that? I’ll tell you what, I don’t want him taking snaps for my team.”
Weatherford also targeted Bradford, who the Eagles acquired from the Rams in exchange for Nick Foles and a second-round pick.
Bradford has an 18-30-1 career record and never reached the playoffs with the Rams. His last two seasons ended with season-ending torn ACL injuries.
Bradford is expected to be the Eagles’ opening-day quarterback in Atlanta on Sept. 14, although coach Chip Kelly has said Mark Sanchez will have the opportunity to compete with Bradford.
Sanchez and Weatherford were teammates with the Jets in 2009 and 2010.
“I’m gonna give you a Ferrari that maybe won’t be running all the time or I’m giving you a nice Cadillac sedan,” Weatherford said, with Bradford the Ferrari and Sanchez the Cadillac.
“It’s not the fastest but you know what you’re going to get out of it. Bradford can go from 0 to 60 in three seconds, but you don’t know if he’s gonna start up some days.”
Weatherford has played with the Saints, Chiefs, Jaguars, Jets and Giants in a nine-year career.
His 44.5 career average is No. 12 in NFL history among punters with 500 or more attempts.
Weatherford also warned Kelly not to give Bradford a contract extension. Bradford is signed only for one more year at $12.9 million.
“Good luck with that,” Weatherford said. “Chip Kelly will get himself in serious trouble if they get an extension for that guy, and he gets hurt? He’s done.”
The Eagles swept the Giants last year and are 3-1 vs. the Giants under Kelly. They’re 11-3 vs. the Giants in their last 14 meetings.
