  • Captain Jack

Before my time, and I'm not a big Billy Joel fan, never seen him once in his multitudes of concerts... but I found it interesting to read this article about how Philadelphia basically made his career.

    http://www.phillymag.com/ticket/2015...ed-billy-joel/

It's worth it to click on the youtube link in the article to listen to the song, IMO. It's a little different than the version that got released on the record. Stripped down. Final line is "Captain Jack can make you DIE tonight". I don't think that made the official recording.

Apparently the only time you are guaranteed to hear that song live anymore is in Philadelphia because Joel acknowledges the connection.

Kind of impressive how much influence Phila radio had back in the day. I think Springsteen was a similar situation. WMMR was it back in the day.

The big connection was Ed Sciaki. The guy did a lot of good for the local music scene at the time.

I remember him. Music was a lot different back in those days not too long ago. The city had a lot of great DJs

I'm kind of proud Phila played the primary role in making Joel and Springsteen popular.... even though I am not into their music. (Ok I'll admit I went to one Springsteen concert on comped tickets... and I did enjoy it)

Add David Bowie to that list.

He was huge in Philly before he became popular around the rest of the US.
It's a reason he did the Live at the Tower album and recorded a few others in the city.
John Erlichman, one of President Richard Nixon's closest aides, has admitted America's "War on Drugs" was a hoax designed to vilify and disrupt "the antiwar left and black people" when it was launched in 1971.

He sings that lyric on the live version on "Songs in the Attic". Which was fittingly recorded at The Spectrum.

For me the two best radio stations of all time:

WMMR... without a doubt for me the best of all time

WLIR.. No longer exists and perhaps that is for the best... That station summed up the 80's for me.

Apparently Philadelphia has good taste in music.

I got to see Joel there once... late 80s, "Storm Front" tour, I think. You could tell it was a special place for him. He had more fun on the stage than anyone I can remember. It was really good show.
