  • Some guy wrote a book about the place where I grew up.

He's around the same age as me. Somebody who appears to be my sister gets mentioned in the book!

I don't remember the guy but he has way too many details correct for it to be fraudulent. Maybe he made some sh*t up but he has the setting down dead to rights.

A friend of mine (not from the neighborhood) read it and said "This guy sounds like he was a juvenile delinquent"... which is probably correct for most who grew up in our area at that time.

IE, is he referencing Greentree Apartments between Naamans and Darley?

Yes, but he is not writing about the apartments, he is writing about the neighborhood with the houses there. But the apartments were definitely there. I delivered newspapers there.

don't know if you've been back lately

but Claymont is undergoing some major changes. Steel mills are coming down and a mixed use development of apartments, condos and shops is going up just south of Darley near the water tower.

And developers have some big plans for the steel yards. We'll see if it comes to fruition, but certainly big ideas.

I've been around there... yes a lot of changes going on especially in the the Brookview area.

Claymont steak shop remains perhaps the best cheesesteak and hoagie place in the world. It certainly matches up against the best places in Phila. (F their outposts in Newark, etc. I understand why they needed to expand but nothing will ever match the original)

always wins the News Journal Best of moniker, and yet for those outside of North Wilmo, it's still something of a local secret.
