"The Miami Dolphins are expected to release Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes in the coming days. The move will be made to create more salary cap space for the start of free agency, which begins on Wednesday.
According to sources, the Dolphins approached Grimes about restructuring the four-year, $32 million contract he signed Miami in 2014, and the nine-year veteran declined, preferring to become an unrestricted free agent.
As of Monday, the Dolphins have not officially waived Grimes, who is owed $8 million in 2016. However, it appears both sides are past the point of no return.
Cutting Grimes creates $6.5 million in cap space for the Dolphins, but it also leaves the team without a proven starting cornerback on the roster, which makes the position one of Miami's top units to address this offseason."
