    Assesment of the McLeod Signing

This offseason Rodney McLeod, Eric Weddle and Tashaun Gipson signed contracts with new teams. Of the three only McLeod has not appeared in the Pro Bowl. Weddle is older while Gipson and McLeod are both 25. The largest contract was given by the Eagles for the former Ram, Mcleod (5 yrs, 37 mill with 17 guaranteed) weddle got 26 with 13 in stone from Ozzie Newsomes Ravens while fmr Brown Gipson got 35.5 for five with 12 guaranteed from the Jags.

Gipson registered at least five interceptions in a season twice scoring TDs in each of those seasons. Throughout his career Weddle has scored three Tds and registered 19 interceptions. Mcleod has five career interceptions and has never reached the end zone in the NFL.

Extrapolate what you need to from the facts above.

I see what you're getting at, but we are paying for the present and the future...not what they have done in the past. I'll reserve judgement until I see him play.

I am no football talent evaluator and try to read as much as possible to learn who's good and who isn't. This article seems to praise the signing of McLeod. Article seems convincing to me

      Best Bang-for-Buck
      1. Rodney McLeod, FS, Eagles
Five years, $37 million ($17 million guaranteed)
Quietly for the past two years with the Rams, McLeod has been the rangiest centerfield safety in football not named Earl Thomas. His speed translates as effectively east and west as it does north and south. And when he goes north and south, he’s a willing and able hitter. Coaches who have to scheme against McLeod have told me they think he’s in Thomas’s class.

The numbers are too low to really give it statistical meaning. Sign the player who looks like the they're most likely to succeed.

Gipson had a down year and Weddle is 31 with an injury history.

mcleod is one of the hardest hitting safties in the league and the eagle d is about the biggest bunch of pussies in the nfl.

            I'm okay with it.

Maxwell was a pussy. He's gone.

Malcolm Jenkins is undeniably a hitter.
Eric Rowe is a very physical corner.
              Hicks ended Romo's season.
Fletcher Cox and Bennie Logan (when fully healthy) can manhandle O-lines.

I don't think the cupboard was bare when it came to toughness. With these defensive acquisitions, I'm excited about the potential of the Schwartz era in Philly.

If Scwartz thinks McLeod is worth the money, I'll get right on board.

Judging safeties by INTs and TDs is like judging a guy by his Madden rating.

Dawkins had plenty of great years with like 3 INTs, and I don't think he scored a TD after 2002.

Gipson is like a box of chocolates...don't know which Gipson you're getting. The good Gipson is...good, the bad Gipson is not good. Weddle is old and will soon decline...not a part of any team's long-term future. McLeod is young and has improved each year he has played. They made the right call here...zero doubt about it.

Ozzie Newsomes track record in finding productive older players suggests that Weddle has a few really strong seasons left in him.

I wanted Weddel but think age was part of the decision

to sign the younger guy with potential in the system.

There were similar conversations regarding Jairus Byrd, TJ Ward and Malcolm Jenkins. It's too early to tell.
