Interesting statement by Tyrann Mathieu posted on PFT:

Mathieu also wrote several tweets about the culture in New Orleans, where he says violence is prevalent and opportunities for young people are in short supply.

“Until y’all get them crooks out of office and until y’all give these kids something constructive to do, the violence will continue to grow!” Mathieu wrote. “They can’t go to parks like I was able to, because the grass ain’t cut & the rims have no nets nor do they even have rims. The budgets cutting into education, recreation and everything else that is VITAL to a kid having success. Not to mention half of their fathers are in prison. So this isn’t coming from an angry place but from a person who has made it out!”

I agree with him that gun laws are not the only laws that contribute to incidents like this, even though they are a very important issue. Which is not to remove the responsibility of the individual, of course. However, when other countries don't seem to have these same kinds of problems, it's worth looking at it from a societal perspective as well.

We'll see how the media spins this one. It's a really sad event for that whole city.

      No you can't.

Prove it. Take a time stamped pic with your phone leaving your basement room.
Buy a gun within ten minutes and show it to us with a time stamped pic.
John Erlichman, one of President Richard Nixon's closest aides, has admitted America's "War on Drugs" was a hoax designed to vilify and disrupt "the antiwar left and black people" when it was launched in 1971.

I realize his quote is oversimplified, but how hard is it to stay out of prison? People can't look for society to throw money at parks and education. That's not the answer. The biggest influence is parents reading and teaching their kids. Parents providing the guidance and example for their children. It's not the finger pointing out, it's the thumb pointing in.

Except when millions are raised by grandma, a single parent or even an older brother/sister...

It's not my intention to remove blame from the individual. No one forced that man to do what he did. I was just observing that when something like this happens, it very quickly gets politicized for the gun debate, but rarely sparks a conversation about the issues Mathieu raises, which are arguably more immediately actionable, although complicated.

If it's just a tragedy, let it be just a tragedy. If it's a symptom of bad public policy, it's gotta be more complex than just gun control. There's too many other forces at play.

Well it's a missed opportunity for Mathieu to speak out to the particular issue that you addressed.

And my point is that if Mathieu wants to be a voice, than address the leading cause of the problems that he's alluding to... the lack of parental guidance. If he wants to talk about the culture, than talk about the importance of prioritizing parental guidance in the culture. Point the thumb in.

500 internet fights, that's the number I figured when I first joined igglephans. 500 internet fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate internet-tough guy. You need them for experience, to develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then...after...you realize that's what you are.

Will Smith story getting a little bizarre? Not road rage?
