Did the Phils ever wear those hats? I don't remember them.

      They look like the Pirates.

yep...they wore them in '76 for the bicentennial

a couple other teams had them too, but the Pirates continued to wear them into the 80s

Gotcha... I don't remember the piping stripes around the hat but if you say they were there, they were there.

at first I thought they were really stupid-looking

...but they grew on me. Kind of like most of KG's posts.

                      Thanks!

It disturbs me that I do not remember this.

John Erlichman, one of President Richard Nixon's closest aides, has admitted America's "War on Drugs" was a hoax designed to vilify and disrupt "the antiwar left and black people" when it was launched in 1971.

I'll cite #48 (original board member... going back a long ways) as an enabler.

in 1976 the Phils hosted the all star game

I was working for a podunk chain of south jersey weeklies. The day before the game both teams took batting practice and I somehow talked Larry Schenk (Phils PR guru) into letting me on the field, along with a friend of mine, to take pictures. There in the batting cage where Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Steve Garvey, Schmidt, Bowa, Hank Aaron, Mark (the Bird) Fidrych.

In the coaching box was Gene Mauch, managing Minnesota that year. I chatted up Bob Uecker. I also talked to John "the Count of" Montefusco and John "Candy Man" Candaleria. Great guys all.

                              Guess what?

I forgot to put film in my camera.

But my friend and I still talk about that day.
