People that know nothing about guns think there is something magically horrible about AR15 type weapons. Basically any semi-auto hunting rifle, pistol or shotgun has the same capacity to kill

Long barrels give more accuracy downrange. Accuracy isn't of any great importance when you're spraying bullets into masses of humanity at point-blank range in a fit of psychotic rage.

In close quarters like a club, any semi-auto is going to wreak havoc. Especially if the shooter has a limitless supply of magazines and the skill to reload quickly under pressure. .45ACP would have been every bit as lethal as the .223 he was shooting, if not more so.
