Seemed to me it was pretty obvious that he had to cover his left side and the kick looked like it was going there from the get go.

It was right in the corner, but that doesn't mean a good goalie couldn't get to it.

Just watched a couple of replays. If Guzan had been able to stop that we'd be saying "Wow, what a hell of a stop!'

Seriousily that kick was PERFECTLY placed. Combine that with uncertainty about where Messi have been intending to go and I see no blame.

Hell, even if you know EXACTLY where Messi was going to go that would have been difficult to defend, IMO.

Easy to say from the television camera's perspective, without players in front of you, screening your vision, etc.

There is a good replay on Deadspin that shows that Messi absolutely started the ball to Guzan's right and curled it left.

Not to mention it dipped so that even if Guzan had been right at the corner he would have had to have been on the goal line.

I looked at it again and still think Guzan had a clear look at it and was late.

It had to be perfect to get in, but I still say if Guzan either was (a) four inches taller or (b) didn't hesitate, he deflects it out.

Ok ok ... I watched it in real time from behind the goal ... hell of a kick.

Actually, the play for the goaltender is to cover the (his) right post.

That's where most players would put the shot. Try and bend it around that side of the wall.

As he showed, though, Messi isn't most players. He made an absolutely perfect shot to the side that is the most difficult to hit.

I can blame Guzan for a lot tonight, but that goal was just incredible.

He started the second half and immediately...

the Argentine players man handled him. They just abused the kid.

It's a real shame Altidore is so injury prone. To me, his loss was the biggest one for the US team. Wood is a nice player, but he's not in Jozy's class. At least that's what I think.

Sorry for chiming in late. Messi's free kick was picture perfect and I mean that literally. If you had an empty picture frame in the upper 90 it would have gone through it.
However, Guzan totally blew that first goal. He made the fatal 'keeper mistake and paused and got caught flat footed. I've played and coached the position. Once you make a move, right or wrong, you HAVE to follow through. Slag you're right, he needed to bull rush that play and hopefully force the player to misplay the chip. Didn't help that Beckerman sucks and was running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Outclassed last night.

I'm not a huge Altidore fan, but, I suppose, part of the reason is he's never healthy.

Pulisic getting owned was kind of to be expected. He's 17 going up against arguably the best team in the world. Good to get him that experience though. He'll get used to playing against that level of player at Dortmund.

I'm not surprised about the result. Soccer is an honest game. Argentina is much better. End of story.

I'm waffling a little again on whether Guzan should have made the play ... he barely missed it.

However, I agree with IE that if he had stopped it we would be marveling at the goalie play instead of the kick ... so I'll back off and revise it to say a great goalie makes the play, but I cannot expect that from Guzan.

He doesn't seem to be very athletic, does he?

I guess I'm getting spoiled watching Blake play for the Union. At least once a game he makes some crazy assed dive through the air to get his hand on a shot going in.

That and watching the goaltenders for the other teams make sick assed saves consistently and require a near perfect shot or pass to an open player like Argentina's 4th goal to score.

Gotta wonder how long he'll stay with the Union.

I'm sure his national team would rather see him up against better competition.

That and the Union ownership aren't exactly bazillionaires like the Phils, Sixers or Flyer ownership. I'm sure if they got offered a hefty transfer fee they'd have to think about it.

But for now, it'll be fun watching him play for the local squad.
