It's a lot better than missing time over a contract dispute.

The Eagles know exactly what they have in Dorenbos, and it gives a young guy a chance to get reps, which means even if he gets cut, they'll have someone to bring back if Dorenbos gets hurt.
Dorenbos is not getting any younger. This helps him set himself up for post-football.
This is good for everyone involved.
