  • Chargers withdrew Bosa's offer

I haven't been following this too carefully and at first I was under the impression that the Chargers were being cheap but I listened to a guy who covers the Chargers and he was saying that Bosa basically wanted all of the money up front as opposed to having some come due next March which is pretty standard. I guess, in theory, he could be cut (would never happen) or suffer a terrible injury in year 1.

I heard they are taking the position that he can't contribute for 16 games at this point so they are going to essentially offer him a prorated contract. What. A. Mess.

The guy sounds like a Grade A dickhead. The way the rookie deals are now, there really shouldn't be much back and forth. Can't imagine anyone on that team wants to play with a rookie who handles himself that way.

It's the Chargers' fault. His agent is not going to let him set a precedent by taking a worse deal than what others at his slot have been given. This is another example of the Chargers shitting the bed with a rookie signing by trying to prove they have the biggest dick.

One of the holdups in negotiations has been that Bosa’s side wants the Chargers to either pay the entirety of his signing bonus up front or to omit offset language that would keep the Chargers from having to pay out guaranteed money to Bosa should they choose to not pick up his fifth-year option.

Bosa wanted his full signing bonus paid before the end of the calendar year, and the Chargers wanted to delay payment of at least a portion of it until March 2017. As far as the offset language, Bosa wanted it to be excluded entirely, and while the Chargers do have a precedent for including offset language in player contracts, the team has not had a top-5 pick since the implementation of the current collective bargaining agreement.

If I'm the third pick in the draft, I'm probably going to have enough confidence in myself to believe I won't be cut after year one. Just get on the field.

And when you pay an agent, you let him do his job. The team can drag their feet all they like, but at the end of the day, they have to explain to their fans (better than this) why they couldn't give their 3rd overall pick the same bonus structure that the rest of the league is giving out.

And that works both ways. If they have any confidence in their talent evaluation, they shouldn't be worried about it either.

I'm not saying this is clear cut. Chargers are being stupid as well. I agree with your snippet that they should either pay the money or eliminate the offset. Just split the difference and give in on one. But still, if Bosa really wants to play football and contribute he needs to get out there. Just don't get cut. Not a big deal.
