    Chelsea Explosion

    The NYC authorities say it's not connected to "terrorism".

    Does that mean it is not connected to a Muslim? In any case who cares? This could have easily killed somebody.

    Secondary thought: The bomb squad got a second device apparently intact.

    Usually they blow those things up in a controlled manner. Instead this time they removed the device intact.

    I have to suspect whoever did this was might have been on their radar screen.

    Followup thought.

    If you wanted to kill / injure as many people as possible why would you place a relatively small bomb like that in a dumpster? All the dumpster would do would be to contain the explosion.

      Now the authorities have identified at least one person of interest. Naturalized American citizen born in Afghanistan.

      There appears to be a connection to the bomb that went off at the run at the Jersey shore that Trent mentioned earlier.

      Some guys picking through the trash in Elizabeth, NJ discovered more bombs there and alerted the authorities. Apparently the bombs were not connected to cell phones like the other ones were. The cops suspect somebody might have been trying to get rid of them in a hurry.

          I heard it was inside the dumpster. From the Daily News article:

          "Initial accounts suggested an explosive device was placed inside a Dumpster, but city officials refused to confirm those reports.

          Sources told the Daily News the explosion appeared to originate inside a large construction site toolbox."

          In any case, the locations of the bombs seem weird. A side street in Chelsea is not a particularly heavily trafficked area. I guess we are lucky this guy (or guys) doesn't seem to be too smart.

            I saw a news video story showing the dumpster with a dent in the outside wall that was "inward" and not bulging out ... indicating the explosion was detonated outside of it.

              There is a photo of the dumpster in the Daily News article. It's mangled and I can't tell anything other that in any case it appears the dumpster took the brunt of the damage from the bomb.

                According to the NY Times, the police have apprehended the suspect after a shootout in Linden, NJ. Big question in my mind is if this guy had help.

                Also this is pretty wild regarding how they IDed the suspect.

                PS to slag: After reading the news reports this morning, the bomb that went off in Manhattan was apparently UNDER the dumpster.

                  Just saw the mayor of Linden, NJ ... the suspect was sleeping in a doorway ... a local cop went up to him and roused him ... noticed he looked like the suspect and told the guy to show him his hands ... the suspect pulled a handgun and shot the cop in the bulletproof vest.

                  He then walks down the street firing his weapon and is eventually shot in the shoulder and taken in custody.

                  According to the mayor of Linden.

                    Follow up ... the NY Post is reporting that the family of the suspect owned the fried chicken place below where he lived ... they had filed a discrimination complaint in federal court alleging that they were required to close by 10 pm by the city council because of their ethnicity.

                    The city council contended it was due to noise complaints by neighbors.

                    Additionally, there was a report in the article that the guy's father wore traditional Afghan clothing and was mocked as looking like a terrorist by locals occasionally.

                    If true, could be motive.
