How many games did he look good for?

I'm very enthusiastic about Señor Wentz, but when I woke up this morning I thought about Hoying and how he looked good for a couple of games.

There is no real reason to believe Wentz will be like Hoying, other than... Eagles.

making the kind of throws this guy has made, being this comfortable in the pocket, elevating his teammates performance, etc.

Not saying a flameout cant happen with this guy, but he appears to me to be at a different level than Bobby Hoying.

There's a great story where it is alleged that John Gruden not only gave Bobby Hoying the play, but told him what defense he would see and where the receiver would be open. Hoying obviously executed that season. When Gruden was hired by Oakland, Hoying didn't have that and went downhill...fast (Dana Bible obviously didn't tell him who would be open). Hoying never recovered, struggled in one appearance w/ Oakland and then got injured and retired.

Wentz has changed so many plays and read the defenses so well, he is, at least mentally, very very good looking.

Edited to add: also what IG said - Hoying never made the throws Wentz has so far. The future is impossible to predict, but Wentz just looks smarter and more talented.

My theory about Hoying has always been that it all started in the first preseason game of 1998. Tra Thomas, the 1st round pick, had a wisdom tooth pulled so the Eagles started chronic underachiever Barrett Brooks at left tackle. Brooks was in the last year of his contract, knew he was leaving the Eagles after the season, and was motivated solely to make it through 1998 uninjured (he did). So he mailed it in that night and his man beat the crap out of Hoying. From that point Hoying always looked shell shocked in the pocket.

i'm too young to know what the feeling was about hoying in 97-98, but he only had one good game as an eagle. both the eagles' and bengals' seasons were also lost at that point, so those 4 TDs were akin to matt flynn putting up huge numbers in a meaningless shootout against the lions.

foles was a better comparison to hoying. i don't think anyone doubts wentz's ability at this point. i think in the best case scenario we're looking at wentz having a matt ryan-type rookie season. he'll have bad games but show high ability for a rookie. he won't post huge numbers but he'll be efficient. a couple wins over good teams could mean playoffs.

Really two great games. The Eagles defeated the Steelers at home either the week before or the week after the Bengals game. And it is not true the Eagles season was lost. Those two wins made the Eagles 6-6-1, still in the playoff hunt (Detroit and Minnesota were wild cards at 9-7). With all due respect, you are right, you probably don't understand what Hoying Mania was about.

I don't know, I remember well, everybody was pretty damn high on Hoying coming out of Ohio, much the same hype as Wentz, maybe more hype, came from a bigger school, and was a true prototype for the bigger, stronger armed QB's that you see today.

BUT, some people have the talent, but they don't have the mental game, that is where I think Wentz is head and shoulders above his peers, guess we will see?

The BS notion that Wentz has only done this well bc of the shitty teams they played is weak. The tight window throws combined with making plenty of tough throws while getting drilled has nothing to do with the competition. Those are just high-level throws that only a few people on this planet can make. Will he have his shitty games this year? Absolutely. But he is a stud and he just needs to be healthy. Next draft, go OLine, CB, and WR. Or address one of those positions in FA and get some depth on the Dline bc Logan will probably not be back.

you're right, i don't know what it was about, and i'm just looking at the stat sheet. i'm also not counting the steelers as game as very good because he completed less than 50% of his passes. i'm just guessing that hoying-mania was more of hoping a guy would pan out than anything else. wentz so far passes the eye test and we at least know he's not a guy like gabbert, when a team reaches at QB because of need.

have to say your sports histories are amazing. i think you also posted once about FF's mismanagement of the clock at the end of the first half against buffalo in his first game. i don't think anyone else would remember tra thomas's tooth surgery, let alone come up with that theory about hoying.

Too be honest though that was maybe one of the worst QB draft classes of all time, they took Hoying in the 3rd and only one QB was taken in the second, none in the first, receiver heavy class.

another way to look at wentz and his performance is this. If these teams are such dogshit...then the eagles should blow them out..and they have.

If the eagles struggled with them...that would be more concerning.

Wentz still stares a bit at his receivers so he'll have to stop that because the steelers play zone and he could be baited into a pick or two.

that being said...he's young and he'll have to learn from it.

Or he goes out, throws no picks and 3 td's.

                              Either is possible.
