Here is my theory. An addiction is a very bad thing but a gambling addiction is much different than a substance addiction.

If you have a gambling addiction and you are losing money it becomes even more and more necessary to risk more money in an attempt to cover your losses. You are addicted to money.

If you are addicted to a substance, I don't believe the increase is so exponential. In fact, it might be possible to just maintain a level of maintenance if you can afford to pay for the cost of the drug, illegal or not.

The problem with a gambling addiction is the cost just increases exponentially over time. Double or nothing is usually not a winning proposition.
