If we (they) want him back they'll tell him to test the market and bring them back an offer to match. And, as of right now, the one you laid out seems realistic.
The position is one of the easiest to find replacements. Guys like Donnell Pumphrey don't grow on trees, but you can occasionally steal one in day 3 of the draft.

The trade Howard thing is a joke from 2008-ish. Everyone always said the Phillies needed to trade Ryan Howard.

Getting that joke would require following the Phillies. Not a thing.

Extending now at a realistic price is better than letting him hit the market. Take the known quantity over a gamble.

No way this team finds any steals in late rounds the way they have drafted. Isn't this one of the arguments we have been having in some posts that we have talent in the building then let then walk and regret it.

At some point just stick to one guy and move forward an lock down a position. Howard and Sanders should be good for years to come and yes you don't need to pay a bell cow 12+ mill if you have 2 that can share the load and a 3rd that can be added to help.

I doubt we would get even a mid-round comp pick for him. Even good running backs don't get paid much these days and especially not backs who aren't considered pass-catchers.

Hope Howie extends him and think it's definitely possible. We've let a lot of backs walk over the years but unlike those other guys Howard's still in his prime and not injury prone.
