  • Wentz by the numbers

I was just curious how Carson's season stacked up against the rest of the league after the last three weeks. I know there are "lies, damn lies and statistics" as Slag is fond of saying, but for what it is worth:

    Completion % - 16th
    Yards - 10th
    TD's - 7th
    QBR - 9th
    Int % - 6th
    Yards/attempt - 26th
    Yards/completion - 30th

My personal take is the last two stats are, in large part, a function of his weapons or lack thereof. He's been a top 10 QB this year. He's proven he has the intangibles that don't appear in the numbers. When I look at the list of QB's and take into consideration their ages, there are only a handful I would take over him right now (assuming he has the upside I believe he does): Jackson, Mahomes and Watson are definites. Rodgers and Wilson probably as well although they are older.

I think to some extent they're all a function of the drops, non-existent chunk plays, and a pretty much historically bad receiving corps. But yeah, the last two really stand out.

I'd be interested in seeing how he stacks up over the last month. It's got to be better than those numbers... but he has still had some crappy first halves over that month.

With regards to Duck's comment, I think the non-existent chunk plays are the biggest problem for a number of reasons.

Yeah, for sure. I was interested to look now because I figured the last few weeks have evened him out a bit. I think if we had DJax all season long, his numbers would be much better. Not because he'd be chucking bombs to 10 but because the middle of the field would be more open. In watching videos from Orlovsky and those guys it seems like they are doing a great job of reading the defenses and exploiting matchups play by play, but that is coming at 7 yard clips because they don't have the talent to open it up. That's my very amateur take anyway.

I was looking for, but could not find, third down conversion or QBR statistics to see where North Dakota Boy stands in relation to his fellow QBs. I have a theory that he's slightly above the median but probably, like everything else, well above the median in the past month.

That would be my guess. One of the things that stood out about the '17 regular season was how automatic they seemed on 3rd down. I expected them to convert every one. That was a new experience as a fan (probably how Pats fans have felt the last 15 years). The last 3 weeks have brought that feeling back a little bit.

It all comes down to the defensive backfield v the Giants though. Barkley will get his, but if they play action or double move, our "toast and then burn" CBs will be, well... toast.

Why is IU not ranked, btw?

IMO the most informative stat of all of those is QBR. QBR has its shortcomings, such as rewarding running QBs too much, but unlike passer rating it accounts for how much a QB’s performance is affected by his supporting cast. I think the top 10 QBR reflects how good of a job Wentz has done to rank towards the top in TD passes and yards despite any sort of downfield threat.

Besides the Minnesota and Dallas games in which the team was completely overmatched, most of Wentz’s struggles were related to the disaster at WR this season and Lane Johnson’s injuries. To avoid giving the QB all of the credit but none of the blame, it’s worth noting that guys like Big V, Greg Ward, and Boston Scott have stepped up lately.

This has been a really good year for Wentz. IMO 2018 was a Kirk Cousins season in which Wentz’s raw numbers looked better than his performance. I’d say the opposite this year.
