  • SO LAYING A BET ON GAMES...

NOT THAT I DO. EVER HAVE...OR PROBABLY EVER WILL...

BUT IS IT BETTER TO BET MONEY LINE OR POINT SPREAD?

EDIT TO ADD: IGGS 7.5 FAVS, SEEMS TOO HIGH.... MONEY LINE SAYS -110.... WHAT DOES THAT MEAN ON A SAY 50$ BET?

-110 means bet $11 to win $10. That's if you bet the Eagles will win by 7.5 points. Personally I wouldn't touch that.

The money line for the Eagles to simply win is -320 or bet $32 to win $10. No thanks on that either. No value there.

He said money line was -110 ... which means you bet 110 to win 100 if the Eagles simply win ... the 7.5 spread is you bet 100 to win 100 if they cover the 7.5 ... now if you lose against the spread you pay 100 plus the vig but that's only if you lose.

Eagles ML is not -110. But if you can get it, take it.

Those odds look right. I wouldn't play it but that doesn't mean it won't win.

Money Line bets are purely win or lose.
Point Spread bets involve a point spread (obviously)

The +/- are odds and apply to both ML and point spread. Plus pays more than you wager. Minus pays less. But if you win you also get your wager back so you make money either way.

In an evenly handicapped game both teams will be -110 or 110 to win 100. This is so the house gets ten percent of every winning bet. Most point spread odds will be -110. The bookie wants to get equal amounts wagered on both sides and take their ten percent no matter who wins..

Not sure if this is helpful but thats how it works. Professional gamblers stay away from gimmick bets like parlays and teasers because the math gets worse. But they are fun because they pay more. Like the lottery.

                    Don't bet the rent money.

                      Hey Maniac -

I'm looking at FanDuel sportsbook for the Eagles game right now. They have the spread at Eagles -8.5 and like you say, both Eagles and Cowboys spreads bets are -110. However, many of the other games have the spread bets at -106 for the favorite and -114 for the dog. The Charges/Broncos game is currently -122 for the dog and +100 for the favorites.

Why wouldn't they all pay the same if they are with a spread?

That's the juice associated with the bet. It's rarely even money (+100). -110 is pretty standard. There are two ways the book can adjust the odds on a spread bet to influence activity. They can adjust the spread itself or they can keep the spread the same but adjust the juice to make it more or less expensive to take a particular side.

Wouldn’t know. I last wagered money on a football game when I was in sixth grade.

You are confusing the issue ... the house gets 10 percent on every LOSING point spread bet (ie. that the bettor loses) ... not on any winning bets.

                              If I bet 100 and I beat the point spread I get 100 ... I pay 110 if I lose but I don't pay 10 percent for a winning bet.

EDITED TO ADD: Although I indicated above that the house gets 10 percent on every losing point spread bet, the vig is sometimes less than 10 percent (as McCarthy indicated in his post) but that's even more confusing for someone new to the game, so I kept it simpler because 10 is pretty standard.
