What I thought was an obvious implication is that you do it because you have a guy who's on the defense as a position player anyway.
Considering the job he did in Dallas, he appears to have the ability to actually kick off adequately ... so if further training makes this viable, why not use him if he adds a legitimate extra tackler?

Not advocation him to be our kickoff specialist, he did ok in the pinch
I would say let him practice kicking so in the next instance he might be able to bang thru some extra points and, or Fill in again if need be. Hopefully not.
the kicker is the safety,,ultimately you don't want it to come down to him.. Akers was special! he was built like a Linebacker but was a kicker
I think he's one of the better special teamers they have. You don't won't him hanging back after kicking... You want him attacking the returner.
How about kicking and then just keep going down the field attacking the runner! He's already built up a big head of steam. You could add an extra legit tackler by doing so.
The premise includes an assumption that he's not just "ok in a pinch" ... the idea is to work him out at the job more to see if he can kick off sufficiently well to do what I'm suggesting.
Clearly you don't do it if he shows that he cannot consistently kick it deep and in the direction you want.
