The original Olympians in ancient Greece were the pro athletes of the day. Most were supported by their city state and lived a better life than the average Joe.
Hell, if they had PEDs they would have used them too. The only reason pro athletes ended up in the games is because those authoritarian states like China and Russia, were sending athletes that might as well have been pros, they were treated like ancient athletes, devoted 24/7 to their sport because they didn't have to pay bills.
