    Bill Bergey

I saw a Twitter post from Bill Bergey’s son Jake honoring his father’s 38 cancer treatments and showing him ringing a bell. I hadn’t heard he was ill and I hope he’s beaten this opponent; he’s my all time favorite Eagle

I was just looking at a football card of his a board member sent me years ago. Best wishes to him.

It's sad to hear Bill Bergey is battling cancer as he was one of my all-time favorite Eagles. I actually got to meet him in 1977 when I worked in a mall pet shop while attending college in Wilmington, Delaware. He came into the store to buy two hamsters for his kids. He wanted two of the same sex so he wouldn't be overrun with babies. It's very hard to determine the sex of young hamsters but I picked out two that I thought were both males. He was very nice and we chatted for a few minutes about football and he thanked me as he left the store. A few weeks later I was working and the manager called me and said I had a phone call. When I took the phone Bill Bergey was on the other end. He asked me if I remembered selling him two hamsters and I told him I did. He replied "well, those two male hamsters had babies last night." I apologized and he was so nice and so funny and just wanted to know if we would take the baby hamsters and promise to not feed them to snakes in the store or sell them to customers to feed to their snake as he had promised his kids that would not happen..

Oh wow, I didn't know he was battling cancer. He always came across as a class individual, very well-spoken but on the field he was a fierce competitor who would like nothing more than to take your head off. An All-Time Eagle
