Extra Refs / Guys on fiekd with bigger black bags?

Anyone else notice that last night? Looked like a back up army of refs dressed in black with some of them carrying black duffel bags? They’d coming flying off the sidelines at times. WTF was THAT??

My wife asked the same question. I really didn’t have a good answer. She noticed when the guy stepped in to break up the handbag fight.

Google wasn’t helpful. It seemed they were wearing NFL hats? Not sure what was up with (or in!) the bags. Seemed like they materialized whenever there was a scuffle of some sort. Not sure I’ve ever seen that before. Weird.

They were the alternate / extra officials for the Super Bowl. I guess one of them would step if an official had to leave the game.

So, the bags may have held the full uniform? It kinda looked like the NFL Security SWAT team!
