A lot of things could have happened. A design flaw, not installed properly, materials used not up to spec., etc. or some combination of all three.

Here's an interesting read on a major design flaw in a NYC skyscraper in midtown. The citicorp tower could easily had come down.

Probably. It looks to me like that central vertical support probably snapped for some reason.

But that cable stayed bridge design is pretty common these days. I can think of at least three highway bridges like that: Rt 1 in Delaware, Zakim bridge in Boston, and the recently opened new Kosciuszko bridge in NYC.

Edit to add: And how could I forget the new Tappan Zee bridge is that type design as well.

Pictures reminded me of the San Fran earthquake that collapsed a 2 level road. Will be interested to see the cause of this tragedy.

Forget it ... I just looked at another picture and saw the crisscrossed cables between the "roof" and walkway.

From what I read it appears a temporary support underneath it didn't hold ... I'm a little surprised they put this shit up with traffic going underneath it ... someone fucked up indeed.
