The Eagles should go ahead and end the speculation and name Foles the starter for Game 1. You avoid a lot of problems that way. First, you assure that Carson has the time he needs to heal..no artificial timetable. Also, if Carson is going to be the season starter, he'll need to take most of the reps in training camp. If Foles is going to start, he'll need those reps.
It seems like there is a very short window now to make that decision.
And then there's the pre-season. If you think Foles will have to start at all week one, you'll want to manage his preseason as if he's the starter - limited time in game 1, most of the game in game 3. Could Carson step in and play week 1 with no preseason work? Possibly, yes. But is that the best scenario for him or the team? No.
The Eagles don't need Carson to win any of their first four games. They should peg his return for October 7, home against the Vikings.
