  • This "He was part of the championship" mentality is dangerous

So was Peters, and he's toast.

So was Clement, and his few big plays might not offset his incredibly average averages for much longer.

The Phils had that mentality, and it plunged them into a rat hole.

DeFillipo is a disgrace as an OC, who wants to be a HC. If he can work on tweaking Wentz for a few weeks before jetting for a better job, fine. But there's no world where I want him having more control over this offense.

I don't see how he stays here next season - I think he'll end up with the Jets as OC.

In his defense, "Kurt" Cousins and Mike Zimmer is a recipe for disaster for any OC.

I don't think it's because he was part of a championship. I think it's because of the narrative that Pederson sucks without his assistants. There are a million problems right now that an OC couldn't solve (no offseason for Wentz, no deep threat, decline on OL, no real RBs), but if it's true that DeFillipo helped Wentz's mechanics then I see no problem with him working as a "special assistant" for a few weeks. If Groh was on the way out anyway, then you try to keep DeFillipo around in 2019.

DeFillipo took the fall for the Vikes signing Cousins without fixing their OL. There could be a lesson here about fall guys, because maybe Groh will get fired for problems beyond his control. But I think DeFillipo was the next logical OC after Reich, and he'd also have less responsibility here than he did in Minnesota. Pederson will still call the plays. In Minnesota, Zimmer delegates the entire offense to his OC.

edit: 2019 depends on whether or not he gets HC offers, which he probably still will.

DeFillipo may do nothing to prevent Pederson from being too pass happy, but he may improve the quality of Pederson's play selection in the passing game. Last year they always seemed to have the right play dialed up - especially on 3rd down. This year, the play calling has been puzzling.

I think Reich probably had more influence, but it is apparent to me that there was a real collaboration there that worked. Wouldn't hurt to bring a piece of that back, especially if Wentz wants him. Ultimately, if Wentz says bring him back, you bring him back.

I think you have to do the last part of what you said. They still have two years to extend him, right? Let him dictate the offseason, see if it rights the ship. If it does, do the extension during the season next year. If not, play hardball.

How do you figure DeFillippo "probably" gets HC offers ... unless you also figure the Vikings will continue to spiral down the offensive toilet and shift the stink soundly to Cousins and Zimmer?

I'm not even sure that will wash enough stink off him ... I'm not qualified to say whether the stink is justified, but teams generally go with flavor of the year assistants from that year's winners, not first time coordinators who got fired mid-season.

whoa, he was also the OC for Jamarcus Russel and couple of the Cleveland 27 before Mayfield. Dude's been around the league for a while!

I actually think people may still be interested in him precisely because there aren't a ton of sexy alternatives and there is likely to be a decent number of openings. But it's really hard to predict.

Josh McDaniels bombed out in Denver. Belichick brought him back to NE and rehabilitated him. Maybe Doug can do the same for DeFilippo.

I probably should have said that he'll get some interest. I don't know if he'll get any offers, but I do think teams will interview him.

The thing is there are no flavor of the year assistants right now. I think that's why every time I watched a Vikings game this season, the announcers were talking about DeFilippo as a head coach next year. There aren't many better options. I could see the Jets taking a look at him.

Bwah ... he got fired after a year in Cleveland and Jamarcus Russell is known for purple drank more than anything he did on an NFL football field

I'm not pissing on DeFilippo ... I actually agree with RSE below and think he might be a horse for a particular course (ie. the Eagles offense) and eventually be a head coach ... but right now he ain't exactly got a hot resume for that.

What are you basing this on? Zimmer has a history of problems with offensive coordinators. Norv Turner quit mid-season on him.

DeFillipo would almost certainly have become the Eagles OC if Reich had left first. No reason not to grab him now if he's available. Especially if Carson is out for the season.

Pederson is a good head coach and a decent play-caller. However looks to me like he feeds off quality collaboration. For instance, Foles was actually the guy who suggested Philly Philly and Doug was fine to go with it. Groh is apparently not providing the help Doug needs. Maybe it was all Reich but makes a lot of sense to give Flip the job since he would have been the choice to begin with.

Vegas has DeFillipo as the favorite (+200) for the Packers HC. I wouldn't make that bet but somebody must believe he's getting offers.

The Vikings offense was ranked 17th when he got fired. Hardly definitive evidence either way.

Right. I'm not sure who's going to be successful in those scenarios. You can lead a horse to water...

I think he'll get some interviews and frankly, he's probably smart to take some time away from the game and get ready. He'll definitely get a job somewhere regardless even if it's landing with Doug as a Special Assistant or whatever.
