I just watched the replay three times and slowed it down.

Hard to see clearly but the hand that appeared to get a piece of the ball seemed to hit the side of the ball that would have deflected it inside, and the kick was just enough outside to miss.

So, if anything, it appears that the "block" made it closer than it would have been.
