  • An actually interesting article from PFT

instead of the more routine Florio shit-stirring.

The notion that Kelly's perpetual hurry-up won't work exactly the way he'd like because of the way the officials spot the ball in the NFL vs. college.

I read a blog that the eagles were practicing getting set for the next play within 12.5 on avg.

That sounds like plenty of time for officials to get set as well.

The officials were used to FF taking 45 seconds.

Teams are already preparing for this.

I think it's going to be a little bit of a shock to watch the Eagles line up after so many years of watching them line up so slowly under Reid (FF).

“We have to make sure teams understand that they don’t control the tempo, our officials do,” NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino told Kevin Clark of the Wall Street Journal. ”We’re going through our normal ball mechanics, we aren’t going to rush [unless] it’s in the two minute drill.”

Blandino’s predecessor agreed; former V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira said that the men in black and white “aren’t going to change just to accommodate someone’s offense.”
              --

I mean, seriously, why would you want the teams to control how they play the game?

                A Philly.com reader mentioned

How the fans typically show up to see the officials work, so why shouldn't the officials control the tempo?

What a bunch peach yogurt for the. Band of buffoons already making excuses for chip ball. The Refs will have nothing to do with the success or failure of chip ball. Chip will. NE is successful because they have a hall of fame QB. Not because they are playing chip ball.

This will nt be Oregons offense unless they plan on running Vick 220 times a season. And the reason an offense like chip ball works so well in college, is that the defense they play it against all season is comprised of 95% of players who will be gym teachers when they leave school.

So lets. Stop this "I don't expect much the first couple of years while re rebuild." Nonsense. They ignored the defense for chip ball. That's not rebuilding. That a continued drop into the abyss that won't stop until they. Change the FO and get a pro coach in and stop the gimmicks. Music ...special sessions at the Linc. All gimmicks........no substance

                    How did I miss this?

Kelly can't run his shit in the NFL because college defenses are 95 percent gym teachers.

While the Oregon offense was all NFL calibre players.

Oh ... wait ... it works with the right QB in the NFL?

                    Now I'm really confused.

Fuck it, I'm gonna go have some peach yogurt.

Easy on that yogurt. My point was that chip ball at the college level is very successful. Defenses can't handle it. So the offense, NFL caliber or not, will be hard to stop. And last year, the QB kept the ball and ran with it over 200 times.

And take a look at some video and watch Brady when he gets to the line and looks at the D and then calls the play or an audible. He is the reason they wind up in the Playoffs almost every year. Can you see Vick walking to the line, making a correct decision and executing it successfully? If you do , put down the yogurt and move to something in a glass.

Are you implying I'm making an excuse for Chip ball? I thought I was just complianing about the idea that officials have the ability to dictate the tempo of the game - I don't care who the coach is.

If the NFL wants to do that, then have a miminum play clock - not just a maximum one. Make it an actual rule than letting officials subjectively manipulate it.

How many times did Tom Brady run the ball?

And did I miss a change in the CBA that prohibits Brian Kelly from using a quarterback other than Mike Vick?

By the way, peach yogurt is fucking tasty ... especially that Fage greek shit.

I think it goes one step further in that the TV networks control the tempo of the game and the refs are just the ones charged with making sure TV is happy. We have documented evidence of NFL refs telling NFL coaches to call more timeouts so they could get in more commercials....

When the Umpire was moved from behind the Middle Linebacker to behind the QB, that change didn't come from the players, the teams, the coaches, the refs or anybody else- it came from TV

TV wanted the added protection for starting QBs because backup QBs= drop in ratings

TV controls the tempo of the game and they have sold rights to putting ads on the screen in between plays

Chip- ball fucks with their plans to pump more ads into the broadcast-

Changes in the modern NFL aren't too difficult to figure out once you learn to follow the money...

That's a good point. I guess I'm curious how tempo will affect TV that much. I suppose ubiquitous advertising like the X-Brand Drive of the Game and commentary could be affected. But with regard to time-outs, change of possession, etc. - would that change all that much? I think it could add more due to drives ending more quickly with either success or failure.
