I'm not labeling Cooper as anything other than an idiot. Your argument is nice in principle, but it has little basis in the reality of this situation.

It's not about whether or not women matter as much

but let's be honest. As far as the objectifying of women, I think you'll find that behavior much more acceptable in the locker room of any professional sports team. How many professional athletes do you think have said things about or done the same things to women that Shady did ? That doesn't make what Shady did ok, but an NFL locker room isn't really the first place I'd look to find chivalry.

I think the reality is that an NFL locker room can find a lot of things tolerable. Cooper is being publicly shamed for being a drunken asshole who made a racist comment. He's being considered and labeled a deep-seeded racist by many (which I doubt but perhaps he is).

He isn't some superstar who gets to fuck around and play by a different set of rules. If he's on the fringe of gettting cut based on talent, then maybe this incident plays a part. If he's not, then I don't see it happening and if he contributes to the team, I suspect at the very least he'll be tolerated if not forigiven and/or allowed to redeem himself.

Like I said, the outrage right now is from the outside. It's made of of people that don't have to deal with him in any capacity and really don't know him in any capacity either.

So it's made up of a group of people that don't necessary follow the norms of "civilized" society and a drunken racial slur is going to destroy it?

Please ... everyone here and in the Eagles locker room has thought or yelled a racist or ethnic epithet in traffic.

And anyone denying it is a fucking liar.

but do you honestly think that his Black teammates/coaches are just going to laugh it off and say "Oh, that's just Riley being Riley" and act like it didn't happen ? I'm willing to bet that his teammates probably didn't think that he had this in him. I'm not saying he's got one foot in the Klan's door, but it's gonna take some time to smooth this over with those guys in the locker room, even his White teammates.

I honestly don't know their relationship with Cooper, I just know that for the most part, locker rooms let things slide - really fucked up things.

Like I said above, I don't think he's getting a free pass. He's publicly being called a racist across social and even regular media. That's a pretty harsh label that has negative affects personallly and professionally.

Are they going to just bro it out without even a discussion? Probably not but I just don't seem there being a riot.

Also, he's not the first southern white guy to play in an NFL (or college) locker room that has a majority of black players. Given all the talk about the intelligence and behavior of football players, I don't think this is some isolated or first-time incident of a player yelling something racist, especially while drunk. Meanwhile, black and white players continue to coexist in the NFL.

It just so happens that it's on camera for the world to see and react over in this case.

Regardless, I'm not condoning it or saying that he shouldn't receive negative reactions for it (not that you're accusing me of that) - but I really see this being blown up outside more than inside.

Everyone wants a cathartic reason to vent their rage when they're not intimately involved in a situation or personally know the offender.

I was actually looking forward to seeing Riley have a much bigger part of this offense. I actually hope they keep him. He's shown a knack for scoring in the red zone, and I'm all for that. He's been fined, and he's the one who's going to have to face his teammates and the media. His best bet now is to keep his head down, shut his mouth and just go out and play, and play WELL.

                          I agree with this 100%.
500 internet fights, that's the number I figured when I first joined igglephans. 500 internet fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate internet-tough guy. You need them for experience, to develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then...after...you realize that's what you are.

Riley Cooper's salary for '13 is $630K. So by rule, w/o suspending him, the max the Eagles can fine him for conduct detrimental is $37,058.
