  • So is Watkins the worst draft pick ever?

If he's not the worst, he's pretty close. Any of the experts on this board could have picked a better player at that slot.

"Watkins was selected 23d overall in the 2011 draft. He had only played four years of competitive football, the last two as a tackle at Baylor. Watkins was 26 when the Eagles drafted him. He started in 12 games as a rookie and six last season at right guard."

But remember they're smarter than everybody else!

he has tough competition. McDougle is up there. Or is it down there? That tackle named Allen in the 70's who ended up in prison was pretty bad. But Leroy Keyes over Mean Joe Greene might be the all time worst ever draft pick.

Graham over all pro Earl Thomas? Not so much about Graham, but to have what is likely a perennial all pro right there for the taking at a spot that is still weak on the team ranks up there as an all time bone headed draft pick. Reminiscent of the Keyes pick.

I remember being at a draft party that day and the collective response was who? WTF? They didn't even have any film or stats on the guy the pick was so far out in left field.

Pretty atrocious, considering if you're picking a guard who is 26, you're basically going for a 'safe pick'

McDougle at least had injury issues to blame, to a certain extent. Watkins just simply could not play, at the position on the line that is the least demanding athletically.

Total embarrassment for anyone involved with that pick.

He doesn't think Watkins plays again.

That might cement Watkins' position as worst. pick. ever.

At least Freddie can thank his hands for 4th and 26 in the waning moments of a playoff game. That was one of the all time great plays in franchise history. Plus, he was a funny dude. Not all bad.

Jon Harris had two sacks as an Eagle. McDougle had three. However, the Eagles chose to keep McDougle and let go of Derrick Burgess.

                            Not even close---

                            Someone mentioned Leroy Keyes

                            1972--John Reaves QB
1981--Leonard Mitchell, DE then was converted to OT by Buddy Ryan
                            1983--Michael Haddix
                            1984--Kenny Jackson
                            1985--Kevin Allen
1989--No No.1 pick because they shipped it to the Colts for the steroid freak Ron Solt--Jessie Small (2nd round)
                            1991--Antone Davis
1992--No draft pick as part of the Antone Davis package--Siran Stacy in the 2nd
                            1993--Leonard Renfro, Lester Holmes
                            1994--Bernard Williams
                            1995--Mike Mamula
                            1997--Jon Harris
                            2001--Freddie Mitchell
                            2003--Jerome McDougal
                            2007--Kevin Kolb (2nd round)
                            2008--Trevor Laws (2nd round)
                            2011--Danny Watkins

I didn't list any draft picks from 74-78 simply because Mike McCormack traded away every 1st round pick in those years for Roman Gabriel and Bill Bergey.

And these are just the 1st round picks. There were other failures in the 2nd and 3rd rounds as well under every coach since the 70s,

Mamula did more for the Eagles than Watkins ever did. So did Freddie Mitchel, who's picture is in my dictionary next to the definition for "Bust". I'd put Watkins as Bernard Williams bad of a pick, but for different reasons.
