If you think having a structured meal plan mapped out will help, and you follow it without cheating, you will lose weight. I never tried it, but it's unnecessary in my opinion. I think you're better off finding a plan using all natural foods (probably cheaper that way too). I know people who did try it. They lost weight, but every single one of them put it back on within months. Diets don't really work in the long run, it's all about lifestyle change.
I'm not sure if you're a drinker, but cutting down beer to one day a week worked wonders for me. Also, obviously exercise is crucial.Last edited by rothdawg; 01-26-2014, 11:21 AM.

Cutting back on beer
Is tough but I've been doing it. One day a week I have a few. And I'm a guy who LOVES beer, and not light beer either. IPAs mostly.
There's a TED video out there somewhere (haven't watched it) about how diets don't work. Almost without fail, everyone that I know that's gone on a diet lost weight, but eventually gained it all back and then some. Haven't tried Nurtisystem or know anyone who has. For now, I'm doing a common sense thing: cutting out crap/junk food and cutting back on beer. Not necessarily a diet, or at least I'm not thinking about it as a diet. Maybe this will work. I could do with losing some of my girth."You on the other hand, describe your shit so many times and revel in how glorious or strange it looks that there is absolutely no doubt you most definitely DO have a shit fetish." - Kelly Green

I'm with Roth on diets to. They work in the sense that it's a realistic long-term lifestyle change (i.e., not doubling down on the baked potatoes or pasta, etc), but it needs to be sustainable. For example during the fall, I hit the trail hard on Saturdays knowing I'll probably be having several cold ones sunday.
Simply put, for the cost, you can essentially due nutrisystem yourself, with perhaps just a marginal hassle of food-shopping, which you already do...

I've had success using MyFitnessPal.com to count calories and track exercise. Has a neat phone app or you can just use the website. It's pretty easy once you get used to it. I would recommend that over something like Nutrisystem just because you can stick with eating the foods you like to eat already, just manage your intake so that you aren't eating too much of it.

I also use the RunKeeper app to track runs and walks via the GPS on my phone:

I still drink a ton, I just track how much and then exercise it off. I really love having these technological tools to help out because without them I don't think I would overcome my laziness to work on this in a systematic way. It's super easy to cheat if you don't keep track of what you are doing.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the replies.
I have been on it for a week, started at 305 and am at 289 this morning. I do believe a lot of you are correct in that diets in and of themselves don't work, but in a nut shell, I am using it for portion control.
We live in a VERY small town in BFE, no fast food or store for 30 miles, and I don't drink, or smoke, never have. Always ate decent, and really don't have a sweet tooth.
But here is what I think is happening, little history, graduated HS 40 years ago at 6'2" 220, raised on a dairy farm, so pretty solid, over the next 5 years I put on some more muscle, was at 240ish and still had a 32" waist.
Was always active, and have flatbed trucked for the last 25+ years, dragging log chains, throwing tarps, climbing on and off the truck and trailer several times a day kept me in good shape.
Right up until I was around 48 I was still around 250, and never had a belly to speak of, but over the last 9 years I have spent less and less time "working" and have had to take more of an administrative role as this company has grown, picking up a little more weight each year.
The big problem is, I still eat like I did when I was sweatin my ass off, but now I have been chained to an office solid for the last 6 years straight.
I agree the exercise part would really help, but have to admit, after 10-12 hour days, I just can't seem to get into it.
So I was hoping that if I could use this program as a crutch to at least drop 30/40, it might get me feeling better to the point of not being so tired at the end of the day.
I did just buy a speed bag setup, and am going to try and get back into that at work, maybe 30 min. at a time.
Wish me luck.Last edited by Eagle Road; 01-26-2014, 02:31 PM.

I can vouch for how an office desk job doesn't do much for your weight. When I was in high school I worked as a bagger for Food Lion in Sunset Beach. Pushing long trains of carts through the lot in the dead of summer and mopping the store (by hand, no fancy machines) at the end of a long shift was a workout each day at work. Now I sit at a desk in an office for a timeshare outfit in Myrtle Beach. Good thing is I walk pretty regularly, usually 4 mornings a week. That goes a long way. Good luck to ya!"You on the other hand, describe your shit so many times and revel in how glorious or strange it looks that there is absolutely no doubt you most definitely DO have a shit fetish." - Kelly Green

Funny thing is it really is just a tipping point. Even if you consume one calorie less per day than you burn you will lose weight. Over time, all of this adds up.
I write this after having an incredible 5 course Italian meal with wine last night. This is where I have to say the weather here totally sucks. I was all ready to walk down to the place (50+ blocks) but then a f*ckin snow squall blows in right when I am ready to leave. Not willing to risk a broken bone by slipping on ice.--------

Before you posted this, I just thought you were some sort of cold hearted right winger. Maybe you still are, but I think its always good to humanize things. It's easy to paint people as bad in the abstract.--------

The bottom line remains if you eat less calories than you burn you will lose weight. Eating the foods he recommends makes it a lot easier to achieve that objective.--------

Yeah, the video is designed for quick info, and it doesn't get into the meat of the approach, but it's a good intro.
One thing he stresses, and I have understood this for years, is that the calorie in vs calorie out mindset is incorrect and self defeating. You have to consider the other qualities of the food you are consuming. 100 calories of lean protein is metabolized differently from 100 calories of sugar or 100 calories of fat.

I was surprised when I weighed this morning, as I am only going to weigh once a week, I figured I maybe lost 5#'s but was very happy with the 16.
Hopefully, it will continue, but I'm sure it will taper from here on. Out of the whole week I only cheated on one meal, after about the 4th day, I wasn't, hungry all the time, we'll see what happens this week.
Thanks for the well wishes,
BTW, talked to my parents today in Easton,Pa, said they had about 8" snow total but Philly was getting slammed, be careful out there!
