Everyone has strong opinions on what's worked for them.

I recommend you get a book on the DASH diet. (I got mine in E form for $6).

It's really not about eliminating anything particularly. It's a 2-week carb reduction, followed by a couple months of forming new habits. It points out that America's obesity/diabetes crisis began with the introduciton food pyramid, which encourages tons of carbs, and less proteins. There's tons of "fat free" cookies, crackers, and other stuff that people are eating to excess thinking that it's not bad for them.

It wasn't very hard, and I went from 230 to 210 (I'm a bit lanky, so I'm not even sure it was that noticeable). A year later, I'm a steady 217. If I were to get over 220, I'd probably just do another week of reduced carbs to put myself in check.

Yes use the food pyramid above - eat healthy correct portions but

Exercise is key -- a split of 3 to 4 days weight training an 30 minutes to hr each session a week and cardio - but key here is to vary intensity -- example tread mill = slow walk followed by all out sprint for as long as you can then slow walk for the length of a 30 minute cardio - do that 2 times a week be sure to have one day off

On your day off enjoy and carb up - rest of the week adhere to that common sense food pyramid and good portion control

Increasing muscle mass increases calories burned at rest. Oh and starving yourself you will waste muscle mass and its contra productive. Losing a half lb a week is about the max for a good long term diet

          Keys to losing weight...
          Calories in / Calories out
Lift heavy things at least 3 times a week
Limit your carb intake. The magic number if grams is different for some than it is for others
          High intensity Interval Training
          Intermittent Fasting

Eating natural foods is also important. Limit processed crap and dont overdo it with the sodium. Lean meats, seafood, leafy greens, nutrient dense foods. Avoid grains, dairy, sugar.

Follow this and the weight will fly off you

That new food pyramid is just as crap as the original. Whole grains with every meal? Thats part of what has America in the obesity epidemic. Grain and sugar.

              The real pyramid should be...
              Lean meats/seafood
              Leafy greens
              Nutrient dense veggies
Seeds and nuts / healthy fats
              Limited amount of fruit

While I disagree on the calorie in vs calorie out thing, I totally agree on the food pyramid debacle. Whole grains are as much crap as any other grains. The convenience food mentality, with nutrient vacant food and sugary "healthy" options is a recipe for obesity.

I know, I tried eating just oatmeal for breakfast with honey, nothing but whole grain breads, and whole grain pastas, nothing, that original food pyramid that was shoved down our throat in grade school is ass backwards.
