Without question, my favorite HAS to be the 1980 Phils. Like my fellow gray beards, when you've suffered through the pitiful 60s topped by that horrible year, 1964, 1980 will never be equaled.
Can it be topped? Definitely -- IFF the Birds finally reach the promised land.
Still, the news about Jim Fregosi is extremely disheartening. God speed, Jim, and thanks for the memories.
Yea, they were fun to watch, but he tainted that team in my mind.
I could never understand the complete and total vitriol directed at Barry Bonds, but Lenny's abuse of the drug was allowed to skate by way too many fans. And even to this day, no less.
Then there's Schilling. What a complete and total ass.
John Erlichman, one of President Richard Nixon's closest aides, has admitted America's "War on Drugs" was a hoax designed to vilify and disrupt "the antiwar left and black people" when it was launched in 1971.
Yeah, But Unlike Some, I Could Never Hate Mitch Williams
Harry The K would say, "The call has gone to the bullpen..." -- the engineer would hit the play button -- and the guitar rip from "Wild Thing" would start playing in the background.
As for the World Series home run, he was a fastball pitcher and he went with his best to a fastball hitter -- somebody had to win and somebody had to lose. I could never hate him for that after all the thrills during the season.

I can't believe I agree with KG on something. Without Mitch they would not have been in the world series. As much as it sucked seeing that HR it happens to every pitcher... It just happened at a horrible time for Williams.

That's a shame that's all you take away from that team. For me it was my first sports memory, the first time I experienced winning in any sport. And the kind of personalities they were made it fun, even if some of them were dicks. I really could care less about Lenny or any of the other guys juicing, and I happen to agree with you about Bonds and the fans in this area. But the season Lenny had in 1993 was remarkable...I'd give anything to have a player like that on this Phillies team. His life after baseball is an entirely different story.
I remember my dad and I were sitting directly in front of the giant Coke sign that was under the big screen at the Vet the night that team won the NLCS. Probably my favorite sports memory.
In terms of a guy like Lenny on this team, I think you're forgetting about our second baseman, who I would take over Lenny any time.
Williams was done in that series ... he had nothing.
That asshole came in with a 4-run fucking lead in that 15-14 game and five runs scored with him on the mound ... if the Phils won that game they would have won the series and they should have fucking won that game.
Then Shilling pitches one for the ages (I was actually at that game) and the next game Williams sucks a hairy dick again.
Fuck him.
Obscenity is the last refuge of an inarticulate motherfucker.
