iowaigglefan said that Nate Allen became a great safety and anyone who couldn't see that was just a dumb fan who mindlessly follows the narrative…no lie, that's what he said…granted, he butchered the language while doing so, but that was his basic thought on the subject of Nate Allen

I don't put much stock in PFF, but:

      8. Malcolm Jenkins
      2013 Grade: -6.0
      2013 Snaps: 830
Summary: For most, tallying a -6.0 overall grade and ranking 65th out of 86 safeties would be considered a terrible year and a low point, but for this former first-round pick it was actually an improvement from his 2012 performance when he ranked dead last in overall grade. So, why is a guy who hasn’t finished in the Top 65 in his position making the Top 10 list? The answer is potential and versatility. After starting his career as a highly touted cornerback, Jenkins has made the transition to safety and can fill the dual role that is desired in today’s NFL. He can cover slot receivers and proved to be an asset in Rob Ryan’s exotic defensive schemes. He led all safeties in Pass Rushing Productivity, generating nine pressures and three sacks on just 35 rushes. At just 26 years old, there is still opportunity for growth for a player who has increased his tackle total each of the last four seasons. This could be the definition of a boom-or-bust signing for a team looking to take a chance on a supremely athletic player that hasn’t come close to reaching his full potential yet, but just might never get there.
Sounds like Davis wants guys who can blitz from anywhere.

Don't like the missed tackles (16 last year) but hopefully he's an upgrade over Chung/Allen
What's an acceptable number of missed tackled for a safety?

            Earl Thomas had 14.

I like Jenkins for $5.5 mil per more than I do Whitner for $7 mil per like Cleveland shelled out.

                Not a bad move

He's versatile, so we can still get another safety. Saints had a pretty good D last year, and he's very experienced to only be 26. Plus, nobody will bitch about a "Dream Team" scenario with him. Solid pickup, but I would not love the tandem of Jenkins and Allen. Byrd and Jenkins, or Ward and Jenkins would be nice

"We really liked Malcolm’s versatility," said head coach Chip Kelly in a statement. "He can line up at either safety spot, can come in and make a tackle and can play man-to-man as well. I had a chance to study him on tape leading up to the playoff game and really liked what I saw. He’s a sharp kid and is ultra-competitive. We are really happy to have him in Philadelphia."

Seems like right now Davis mainly wants guys who are versatile and smart with leadership potential, even if they aren't amazing at any one thing in particular. He's the Bennie Logan of safeties, which I think isn't bad thing when you're trying to develop a young safety group (Early Wolff plus a draft pick).

                          Upgrade for a reasonable price.

It would have been nice to sign Byrd, but thirty million guaranteed? Insane.
