After two days of doing this, my neighbor rings my doorbell at 6:50 this morning complaining that "Your dogs are in the yard barking all day!" Her two dogs (which I admit bark less than mine) are out in her yard all day as well.

I've drafted a letter, seeing if we might be able to come to an arrangement that works for both of us. Maybe I come home and let them in at lunchtime, or guarantee that they're inside by 5:30 every evening. I just don't think in a neighborhood full of barking dogs, I should have to not put mine in my own yard and have her complain just because I'm the closest target to bitch at.

Am I an asshole for this?
They're dogs. Let them do what dogs do, which is sleep all day while you're at work.

      Root of the problem ?

Why are the dogs barking ? ....because they are dogs...

Try spending a couple bucks on a fence-window so they can see what's on the other side of the fence - sometimes that's enough to get them to mellow out. If nothing else, it shows the neighbors you're making an effort

Letters are for people who want to avoid confrontation; but that's all they ever cause is more conflict. Grow a pair and talk to the people. Just prepare a couple of options ahead of time and consider some professional training too - (for all the dogs...) There's a solution here, but you might have to try a couple things or even toss some cash at it. BFD, its better than living next to people who are always pissed at one another

Do they make ones that go off when they bark?

Yes. It has rubber sensors that lightly press against their throat and it activates when it detects the barking. You can adjust the shock level on most of them.

Edit: I've never tried them, but I hear the Citronella and Ultrasonic collars are garbage and don't work.

They try to play down the shock effect. Don't believe them. I carried one in my hand over the perimeter of my grandparent's yard and it shocked the shit out of me. (that was an "electric fence" collar, though)

I thought you guys had cats?

Ditch the dogs, they're a pain in the ass.

Crate train them and then crate them in the house.

You know this is your penance for having a cunty dog like a shiba inu right?

The plot thickens. Glad I didn't write that note.

So I decided to take a case of Yuengling next door and make nice. Turns out the wife was pissed because the neighbors in the back called the cops on THEM because they thought it was their dogs.

I think I'm going to go grab a bark collar for the mutt, and the neighbors have agreed to stick them in the garage if they get too loud.

Fucking old people and their phones.

They were both crated. I just work more now, so I don't want to leave them cooped up in there all day.

It's funny. The one who barks loves staying inside, and the one who is good outside is bad when left inside.

He's not the one barking, just the one destroying the house when left inside. They were both crated as puppies, but I don't want them to spend 8-10 hours a day in there.

Put an NRA sticker on your car and the problem will go away

In modern times, many places and people consider leaving dogs outside alone to be cruel. Of course they'll bark in those conditions. You can't even rescue a dog in LA if you plan on leaving them outside. Considered animal cruelty.

That's what folks do in rural areas but not cities or suburbs. If one trains their dogs to live in the house they really like it. They feel secure and mostly sleep. Outside they become anxious and territorial with no human presence.

There's absolutely nothing cruel about what I'm doing. They have people door, not dog door, access to my garage which has plenty of water, beds for both of them, and tons of toys, not to mention all the indoor space to move around in that they could want. It's pretty much the same setup they have at the daycare.

They'll be fine crated for 8-10. You can also put fenced kennel things in your garage if you have room. Kinda like the humane society has.
