Because it's not normal to see a video of any seventh round draft pick smashing cake over their significant others face, gay or not.

when the selection of that 7th round pick is one of the biggest social statements in modern pro sports history.

After missing the Sam pick and now seeing a recording of the kiss...

I think I would've actually been less uncomfortable if he had just sucked his dick on camera.

because before Saturday, there were plenty of football players who were openly gay, being drafted into the NFL, a place where machismo is not only the norm, but the rule, and where even 315 pound heterosexual offensive lineman can be bullied by their teammates.

How can you even say what is appropriate or inappropriate for the FIRST gay player drafted? I'd say we found the inappropriate line for future gay draftees.

There will be a new chapter in the draft preparation guides on "Draft Day Reaction" and an entire 2 paragraphs will be spent warning against the temptation to tongue-fuck your partner's cake-covered face.

I'm with Eagle in Ohio. I don't think it was over the top, its a big moment in sports.

Another thing I don't understand is how can getting the SEC Defensive POY in the 7th round solely be a publicity stunt? I get that his combine and measurables were not impressive, but he HAD to be doing a lot of things right to earn that honor.

Or he can just act like a normal human who got drafted in the seventh round... not reenact a wedding scene. Why you can't see that as being weird is amusing.

Is that I don't believe that Michael Sam's reaction was over the top. Some say that it is. I simply asked why they thought that, and I've gotten every answer under the sun, but the first one to even answer the question directly was Muggz, just a few responses ago. I'm not trying to say what is and isn't appropriate. My contention has been that it wasn't over the top, and I provided examples as to why I feel that way.

Yeah, I don't get it. It's not like this is some common form of celebration. He did the cake-face-kiss thing during his DRAFT coverage. Who even does that?

It's not hard to see that there's more at work here. You can tell he's got handlers telling him how to stage the house and celebration and what to say to the press.

The reason teams stayed away until the 7th is because you've got to basically go in to business with Michael Sam, the BRAND, and deal with top-talent level bullshit for a marginal talent player.

In all honesty, if a straight player that was drafted in the 7th round did what Michael Sam did, I'd think it was over the top. If you don't, that's fine.

I wonder if the dude was replaced by a woman in that same situation if people would've even noticed anything about it.

It would have seemed really weird to me.

can you remember any other celebrations that seemed over the top or weird to you? I'd have to guess someone was "over the top" while maintaining 100% heterosexuality that you'd remember.

Good question. However in watching the draft for the last 30 years, I can't say I've ever seen a drafted dude cover his wife or girlfriend with cake and then start eating it off her face.
