I'm no fan of relying on out-of-context stats (particularly cherry-picked ones), but I'm really starting to come around on Matthews. These numbers certainly help.

I think it might have been Mel Kiper that said if the Eagles had picked Matthews in the 1st, and Marcus Smith in the 2nd, the value would have been spot-on. The depth at WR and lack of depth at pass-rushers just dictated the reversal.

I really think Matthews is going to have a huge role, and might even be getting snaps equal to Maclin and Cooper by the end of the season.

I think Matthews might need a year of bulking up, but everything suggests he will be effective in this offense, this year

Out of context stats? Melchoir went out of his way comparing apples to apples. If he threw up average yards punting or field % that would be out of context. Comparing WR stats in the same years against the same opponents is on point.

And WAY more talent around him offensively. Vandy's offense was Matthews or bust. Defensive coordinators had one goal, and that was stopping Matthews. Typically, they didn't do a good job of it.

              I was confused

              I thought it was this:

              Casey Mathews 0

              Anyone else named Matthews 1,000,000

All stats are out of context. Football is too complex to be reduced to numbers and understand the full picture, particularly when using them to project future production. This is why scouts watch film and conduct interviews rather than just pick the guy with the most yards and the fastest 40-time.

However, the numbers in the original post were as compelling and valid as statistics can possibly be.....which is why I said in my post that they were really helping me to get behind the Matthews pick. After seeing numbers like that, you have to wonder why Matthews wasn't in the same conversation with Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, and the rest of that tier.

I wasn't discounting the post or it's content....just offering a personal caveat before agreeing.

Matthews padded his stats in a spread offense that used him in a lot of WR screens

                    Where'd you hear that bull?

In real news, did you just read that Eli Manning is retiring? He's finally decided to get his sex-change operation.

Good news you can use the same excuse in November when everyone is criticizing the giants for picking Beckham over Matthews after Matthews goes for 120 and a touch against the midgets.

Seriously, what a buffoon. This idiot says Matthews played in a spread offense and ran a lot of WR screens to great success like it's a bad thing.

Too bad Chip Kelly doesn't run a spread offense or love running WR screens or anything.

I would almost guarantee you have not watched a single second of a Vanderbilt football game the past 4 years. But to be fair, I don't think you watch much football period. Now that Franklin is at Ped State though, I'm sure if they have a receiver in a couple of years that the Giants draft, you'll be blowing the guy any chance you get and not mentioning him running screens.

Besides, I think another poster pointed out the fallacy in your statement. Matthews will have plenty of opportunity to "pad stats" through screens in this spread offense, so he'll likely run by the shit-awful safeties of the Giants several times off screens this year.
