Because there are no other options. Foles is traded, Mariota is your Day 1 starter, you don't have a spare pick to draft another QB, and the FA market for QBs looks like the bread aisle at Shop-Rite on the night before a blizzard.

You have one choice: be thankful Sanchez isn't delusional enough to believe he's a starter somewhere and sign him.

If it was going to be Hundley or Petty, you don't need to trade Foles to get them and you don't need Sanchez. Sanchez returning strongly points to Mariota coming to Philly.

At best he seems only a very slight upgrade over Sanchez. McCown was terrible in Tampa last year.

Good backups should be in demand to start on other teams.

There are two types of backups:

1) Young QBs who have starter potential.
2) Veteran QBs who don't.

Sanchez is in the second group. Just because he's never going to be a legit starter again doesn't mean he doesn't have value as a backup. He can come off the bench and win you a game in a key spot here and there. If you lose your starter for the year and need Sanchez to take you the rest of the way, your season's effectively over.
