IMO, it should only enter the discussion if paying one guy prevents you from signing other people (for example, Shady's salary became relevant assuming they plan to use that $ for other needs). All that matters is whether they are good. If Maxwell, Maclin, whoever, play well, who cares how much money they are making?

The Nnamdi and DRC signings weren't bad because they paid too much, they were bad because they sucked at playing football. If Maxwell plays well I won't care if they paid him a few million more than the "should have." Conversely, if he sucks, I'm not going to be mad that they paid him $60 million; I'm going to be mad that they paid him $1 and thought he could play.

I don't know, I never get wrapped up in the contract stuff.

Not sure why people are freaking out (not so much here) about the fact that Maxwell is getting paid 8 versus 9 versus 10 million.

However, the logical extension (based on what you wrote) is that if Maclin (or McCourty) sign elsewhere for what is perceived to be $1 million more than what the Eagles were alleged to be offering, then it's clearly because of the Maxwell deal. In some fans' minds...

Agreed. I would prefer to overpay for a guy who can possibly deliver than to pay perceived market value for a guy who is mediocre.

Only problem is we don't know if Maxwell can deliver.

The problem with the 2011 FA signing spree was the FAs that they signed, not the idea of paying good players. You have to be shrewd when you have opportunities to upgrade in FA. As long as you know what you're looking for, you can improve your team quite a bit by smartly poaching players from cap-strapped teams as they become available.

If he's paid like a a difference maker, then he needs to be a difference maker. Otherwise, the money could have been spent elsewhere or moved forward to next year for a player. You don't want to be in cap hell and mediocre like New Orleans right now.
