  • Question for Sixers savants

I've only been loosely following the whole 'tank the season, get a good draft pick', but if the master plan works, what year are the Sixers supposed to start being good again? Next season? Season after?

I think it really depends on Embiid. If he's out again, I wouldn't expect the Sixers to be too much better next season (25-30 wins). Next year they will have 3 or 4 first round picks and a ton of cap space, so I would expect them to start being competitive in 2017.

Not crazy to think they could be a decent playoff team by 2017. I think they "turn the corner" next year, so to speak, in the sense that I think they're going to win more games then they did in 2014-15. If Embiid's healthy this year it's not crazy to think they'll be in the running for the eighth seed in the playoffs -- faint praise, since the eastern conference stinks, but still. If Embiid's the next Greg Oden, I agree, that sets things back a year at least.

Never been in favor of the tanking thing but I understand its a risk/reward enhancer. It still comes down to you have to get lucky in the draft.

And to answer your question honestly...I dont know. And neither does anyone else. Obviously IF they manage to luck out and draft a franchise difference-maker it could be next year, but we are talking about a huge "if." Just as many ifs can take it the other way or keep it stagnant.

I'm no sixer savant by any means, but I'm losing patience.

Me either, but I think they need to make a statement tonight that they have their foot on the gas. They still won't be very good next year, but they need to get players who can start contributing. Have to take Russel if he is there at 3. Hopefully Embiid plays this year and they get tons of draft picks, Saric and cap space heading into 2017 when things really need to start moving.

I know everything is a huge if, especially teams that play in The City of Chickenly Choke, but I got the answer I was curious about.

I'll never be anything more than bandwagoner with the Sixers, but they might be the Philadelphia frontrunner for next playoff appearance in this initial four-team drought.

I agree with the thoughts on Embiid. I actually think they could be a playoff team (7 or 8) in the East if he's healthy and if Russell ends up being a true top-3 pick.

If Embid doesnt play between their pick and Lakers protected pick would have to good shots at another couple franchise difference makers next year too. Tank baby Tank as long as is see progress building a dynasty what is a year or two more to wait to start to see working. I expect improvements each year. Next year probably be the last year for a long time at a shot at top ten picks. I think 2017 will be the year the younsters start to improve and they fill the roster out with role players. 2018 the year they start the run. For me I just enjoy watching this b ball team knowing there is a plan to excel instead of remaining mediocre for decades.
