Yeah man I grew up with two German Shepherds and a Doberman, the Sheps were more aggressive than the Dobie, but they were outside dogs.. I wouldn't own a Rot if someone paid me.

Definitely recommend a Shepherd than Dobie.

Good luck on your dog hunt

If I remember right don't they have like a stage one or stage two (once removed or domestic breed or twice)?

Are they still like 2500.00 a kitten? I have a big Maine Coon that my dog knows better than to screw with, can't imagine what the dog would think about a Savannah.

          Thanks

            Here's a novel idea

Instead of focusing all of your love and attention onto a disgusting animal that licks it's own a$$, why not focus it on you spouse, girlfriend, or significant other?

Police and military are using Malinois ... the Belgian version of the Shepherd at least as much as the German version I think ... I see a lot of them when I see K-9 cops in train stations etc. or on television.

Little smaller, less shedding and smart as fuck.

I think I missed something here TGP, are you saying that his spouse, girlfriend, or S.O. should be the "watchdog" of the home?

if you are between a rott and German shepherd, get a mix of the two. That's exactly what I did...except it ended up being a rott Aussie shepherd mix and is only about 60 pounds. You can use petfinder, put the mix in and find the closest dog. If you research dogs by intelligence, you'll find that both rotts and German shepherds are always in the top 10. I'd also recommend reading a couple books on how to train a dog. If you are steadfast that first year, those two dogs can help you do a ton of shit around a farm. I will say that a rott alone is a more beautiful dog, but the males are fucking massive. I'd go with a bitch.

Truth, but they're a bad choice for someone who isn't very experienced handler and good trainer. They have insane energy and aren't nearly as user friendly for a novice.

                      Ah ... didn't know that.

I had a German Sheppard as a kid ... great dog but we didn't train him well enough to obey off the leash and had to chase him around the neighborhood to get him back if he got loose.

Fucker loved to ride in the car so we'd drive to where he was sniffing something and open the car door and he'd beeline right in it.

there are also great books about how to select the right breed for what you want, but I think you are on the right track. Both are working dogs, protective, smart, and loyal. Both are higher risk around children (as are almost every powerful dog), but this is almost 100% nullified with consistent traning. The hard part is being consistent yourself, and even more so with the girlfriend or wife. My ex wife was lazy and wouldn't read the books, wouldn't do what I told her to do, so the training was much harder. She's watching the dog now, so lord knows if I'll ever be able to fix some of the bad habits she's no doubt getting.

Between a German shepherd and a rottweiler I think the shepherd is probably easier to train. A well bred rottweiler can be an incredible family companion on top of being pretty intimidating for unwanted guests. I have a three year old German rottweiler. Calm, collected, quirky, lazy at times, independent, obedient are all ways I'd describe him..he's also very aware of who belongs on my property and who doesn't.

                            Did I read that right?
